What Is A Karat?
Karat (K) is the unit used to measure the purity of gold. It tells you how much of a gold item is actually made of pure gold versus other metals like copper, silver, or zinc. Pure gold is 24 karats- that’s 99.9% gold. Lower karat ratings, like 18K or 14K, indicate that the piece is mixed with other metals to make it stronger and more durable.
Most jewelry in the U.S. is made from 10K, 14K, or 18K gold. While these are not pure, they’re more resistant to scratches and dents- which is ideal for rings and bracelets worn daily. On the other hand, 22K and 24K gold are softer and more commonly found in investment-grade coins or ceremonial jewelry.
